Rainbow Mountain and Ausangate 7 Lakes hike, also known as “MontaΓ±a de Siete Colores” or “Mountain of Seven Colors,” is a vibrant, multi-hued peak situated in the Andes of Cusco, Peru. It gained international fame in recent years due to its striking colors, caused by the presence of different mineral deposits in the rock formations.
The mountain’s distinct coloration ranges from shades of red, pink, yellow, green, and blue, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. The trek to Rainbow Mountain typically starts from the town of Llocto o Qosqopata, taking around 2 hours to hike to the summit (altitudes of over 5,000 meters/16,400 feet). The journey offers stunning views of the surrounding Andean landscape and the snow-capped peak of Ausangate.
The Ausangate 7 Lakes trek is a rewarding and less-frequented alternative to the more popular Rainbow Mountain trek. The journey allows travelers to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of the Andean highlands, passing through traditional villages, grazing llamas, and awe-inspiring mountain vistas.
The trek typically takes several days and requires a higher level of physical fitness and acclimatization than the Rainbow Mountain hike. Along the way, trekkers may encounter unique wildlife, such as vicuΓ±as and alpacas, as well as Andean communities that have maintained their traditional way of life for centuries.
The highlight of the Ausangate 7 Lakes trek is reaching the turquoise glacial lakes, set against the backdrop of the Ausangate Mountain. The pristine, shimmering waters of the lakes add a magical touch to the already breathtaking landscape, making it a photographer’s dream.
Both Rainbow Mountain and Ausangate 7 Lakes provide unforgettable experiences for nature lovers and adventure seekers, showcasing the natural wonders and cultural richness of the Peruvian Andes. As with any high-altitude trek, it’s essential to be prepared, travel responsibly, and respect the local environment and communities.
Our guide will pick you up from your hotel with our private transportation between 4:20 and 4:30 am. From there, we will drive to Qosqopata (4,700 m / 15,419 ft), where we will begin the trek. While we arrive and get ready, our cook will prepare a delicious breakfast for the entire group.
After breakfast, we will begin our hike and walk for approximately 1.5 hours to reach the famous Rainbow Mountain (5,100 m / 16,732 ft). Thanks to our early start, we will be among the first to arrive, allowing us to enjoy the colorful landscapes in a calm and quiet atmosphere.
After visiting Rainbow Mountain, we will continue walking for about 30 minutes to reach the Red Valley (5,100 m / 16,732 ft). Here, we will spend approximately 30 minutes exploring the area and enjoying the unique red terrain and wide Andean scenery.
After visiting the Red Valley, we will return part of the way along the same trail and then take a detour to continue our trek for about 3 hours until we reach Anantapata Camp (4,750 m / 15,584 ft). Upon arrival, our cook will be waiting with lunch ready, and we will enjoy our meal surrounded by green valleys and snow-capped mountains.
After lunch, the afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surroundings at your own pace. Around 5:30 pm, our cook will prepare a delicious dessert, followed approximately 30 minutes later by dinner. During dinner, our guide will explain the plan for the next day before we rest for the night.
Today, as every morning, our professional cook will wake us up with a hot cup of tea or coffee, while our guide will be available to answer any questions and give a short briefing for the day. After enjoying a hearty breakfast prepared by our chef, we will begin our hike.
We will start ascending for approximately 2 hours until we reach Puka Cocha Pass (4,870 m / 15,978 ft). From the pass, we will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the colorful Puka Cocha lakes and the majestic Ausangate Mountain (6,372 m / 20,905 ft), surrounded by impressive landscapes and large herds of llamas and alpacas grazing freely in the high Andes.
After spending some time exploring and taking photos, we will descend along a scenic trail to Huchuy Puka Cocha, where our lunch spot will be set right beside Puka Cocha Lake, offering a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful reflections of the surrounding mountains.
Following lunch, we will continue our trek on mostly flat terrain for about 1 hour, then begin a gradual uphill hike for approximately 1.5 hours until we arrive at Yanacocha Camp (4,570 m / 14,993 ft). This camp is located next to the dark-blue waters of Yanacocha Lake, a quiet and remote place where you can relax, enjoy the silence of the Andes, and witness a stunning sunset reflected on the lake, creating a truly unforgettable high-altitude experience.
Today, our chef will wake us up at Yanacocha Camp with a hot cup of tea or coffee. After breakfast, we will pack our belongings and get ready to continue the trek, enjoying the fresh mountain air and the peaceful surroundings.
We will start walking directly from Yanacocha Camp, following a mostly gentle trail across open highland landscapes. After about 1.5 hours, we will reach Arapa Pass (4,800 m / 15,748 ft). From the pass, we will enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, wide valleys, and the surrounding highlands. We will take a short break here and, with some luck, spot vicuΓ±as in the area.
After crossing the pass, we will descend along an easy trail toward the Upis Lagoons, where we will take time to walk around the lakes, rest, and enjoy the reflections of the mountains in the clear water. This is a peaceful area and a great place to take photos and appreciate the natural scenery.
We will then continue to Upis Camp (4,400 m / 14,436 ft), where lunch will be ready upon arrival. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surroundings at your own pace. Those who wish can also visit the nearby Upis hot springs, perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking.
We will spend the night at Upis Camp, enjoying the quiet atmosphere of the Andes and preparing for the next day of the trek.
Today is a beautiful day. As usual, our cook will wake us up with a hot cup of tea or coffee, giving us time to enjoy the peaceful morning. After breakfast, we will begin our hike from Upis Camp, leaving the hot springs area behind.
We will start walking toward the Seven Lagoons area, passing through high-altitude landscapes surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Along the way, we will visit the 7 lagoons, each one with a different color caused by the minerals found in the water. During this walk, it is common to see alpacas and vicuΓ±as, and with some luck, chinchillas and even the Andean condor flying above the valley.
We will take our time to explore the lagoons, walk around the area, and enjoy the scenery before starting our descent. After exploring the lagoons, we will continue hiking downhill for about 2 hours until we reach Pacchanta village (4,100 m / 13,451 ft).
Once in Pacchanta, we will first enjoy a relaxing bath in the Pacchanta hot springs, well known for their warm waters and medicinal properties. After the hot springs, our cook will be waiting for us with a delicious buffet lunch prepared by our professional chef.
After lunch, we will board our private transportation and begin the 3-hour drive back to Cusco, where our adventure will come to an end with drop-off at your hotel.

ouβll receive a canvas case or duffel bag during your briefing. The porters will take them on the way and will deliver them to you when you get to each camp. They measure 66 cm / 2 ft. Long x 36 cm / 1 ft. Wide.

Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.

Peru Hike Company can pick you up from your hotel, as long as itβs in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
Youβre responsible for your objects during the tour. Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our trucks, tents, or restaurants.
The trek was an unforgettable experience. The landscapes are out of this world: towering mountains, crystal-clear lagoons, and the spectacular Rainbow Mountain. Our guide was very professional and attentive at all times. Definitely one of the best treks Iβve ever done. Highly recommended!
This trek is demanding, but every step is worth it. The natural beauty of Ausangateβs 7 Lagoons and Rainbow Mountain is indescribable. I recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for a few days beforehand. Everything was well organized, and the food along the route was delicious. I would do it again without hesitation!
From day one, the experience was amazing. The guides were very friendly and knew the route very well. The views of the lagoons and snow-capped mountains are simply breathtaking. I loved the connection with nature and the interactions with local communities. A magical experience!
we went on a 4-day hike, where we saw the 7 lakes, ausangate and ended up in rainbow mountains and red valley (and a lot of alpacas). really cool experience, with good cooks and equipment (sleeping bag, tent, sleeping mat). really beautiful nature, with glacierlagoons, huge mountains…), but you can feel that you are high up! it was relatively cold and quite hard because of the thin air. So bring lots of warm clothes. But definitely worth it!!!
A very different and spectacular hike. I recommend taking this tour with PERU HIKE. Before starting the tour, I recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for 2 to 3 days by taking 1-day tours. This company also offers acclimatization tours. You can contact Franklin through the chat. He is a very nice person.
