Discover one of the most spectacular high-altitude landscapes in Peru with our Horseback Riding to Ausangate and the 7 Lakes experience. This unforgettable journey takes you deep into the heart of the Andes, at the foot of the majestic Ausangate Mountain (6,372 m / 20,905 ft), the highest and most sacred peak in the Cusco region.
This experience is designed for travelers who want to explore the Ausangate region in a comfortable and scenic way, combining breathtaking nature, Andean culture, and unique landscapes. Riding through wide open valleys surrounded by glaciers and snow-capped peaks, you will immerse yourself in a world of turquoise lakes, colorful mountains, and herds of alpacas grazing freely in their natural habitat.
The route follows the famous 7 Lakes of Ausangate circuit, where you will discover stunning lagoons such as Comercocha, Patacocha, Azulcocha, and Otorongo, each one offering different shades of blue, green, and emerald colors that contrast beautifully with the surrounding glaciers and mountains.
Throughout the journey, you will enjoy constant panoramic views of the Ausangate Glacier and the dramatic Andean scenery, making this experience perfect for photography lovers and nature enthusiasts. The peaceful rhythm of horseback riding allows you to fully appreciate the silence, the immensity of the landscape, and the spiritual atmosphere that makes Ausangate one of the most special places in southern Peru.
To complete this unforgettable adventure, you will have the opportunity to relax in the natural hot springs of Pacchanta, famous for their thermal waters and their privileged views of the Ausangate Mountain, offering the perfect ending to a day full of discovery, comfort, and Andean beauty.
Our unforgettable adventure begins very early in the morning, when our professional guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco between 4:20 and 4:50 AM. From there, we embark on a scenic 3-hour journey through the breathtaking Andean landscapes, passing traditional villages, grazing alpacas, and snow-capped mountains, until we arrive at the charming village of Pacchanta.
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by a local family, experts in traditional Andean cuisine. Here, you will enjoy a delicious Andean breakfast while soaking in spectacular views of the surrounding snowy peaks and observing alpacas roaming freely. This is the perfect moment to take photos and immerse yourself in the serene mountain atmosphere.
After breakfast, we will meet our horses for the horseback riding experience, beginning our journey toward the majestic Ausangate Mountain (6,372 m / 20,905 ft). Along the way, we will stop at a local familyβs property, home to hundreds of colorful alpacas. You will have the opportunity to enter the enclosure, take pictures, feed the alpacas, and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while admiring the stunning Andean scenery.
Continuing our ride, we will reach the foothills of Ausangate, where the famous 7 Colorful Lakes are located. Here, we will take a leisurely exploration tour, walking around the lakes and learning from our guide about their fascinating colors, legends, and the ecological importance of this sacred place. Every lake offers unique photographic opportunities, from turquoise waters to reflections of the snow-capped mountains.
After fully exploring the lakes, we will return on horseback for approximately 2 hours to Pacchanta, where you can relax in the natural hot springs. These springs are believed to have medicinal properties, making it a perfect moment to unwind and rejuvenate while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
Following this refreshing experience, we will visit a local familyβs home for a traditional Andean lunch, savoring authentic flavors of the region. Finally, we will begin the return journey to Cusco, arriving at 6:00 PM at the Plaza de Regocijos, marking the end of this extraordinary day full of adventure, culture, and breathtaking landscapes.
Important Note: This tour is conducted as a mixed group, consisting of travelers who walk and travelers on horseback. All participants must adapt to the pace of the walking travelers, which means our guide will establish strategic meeting points throughout the activity.
For those who want to experience the tour at their own pace with complete flexibility, we highly recommend choosing the private tour option when booking. This option is perfect for couples, families, or friends who want to explore Ausangate with an exclusive guide just for their group, allowing more time to enjoy the landscapes, take photos, and fully immerse in the adventure. Unlike large group tours that follow a fixed schedule, a private tour offers a more personalized, comfortable, and flexible experience at every stop.
We want to make your trip to Peru as memorable and as easy as possible. In this section, you will find speedy answers to all those questions you had about Horseback riding to Ausangate & 7 lakes tour in Group in one place. Please read the following information carefully β it will help you with any questions about our services.Has another question that we havenβt answered here? Drop us a line, and we will get back to you asap!
All information meetings are held in your hotel at 6:00 p.m., one night before the tour begins. If you cannot attend, you must coordinate another time at the (Peru Hike) offices. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes and there you will be given a small duffel bag, in which youβll put all the belongings you intend to bring on the trek that wonβt be in your day pack.
The trek has to be paid for in full by at least 7.30 pm two days before departure. For example, if your tour departs on a Wednesday, then you must come to our office before 7.30 pm on Monday.
It would be much appreciated if you pay the trek balance in cash US dollars or local currency. You can withdraw some money from several ATMs along Avenida Sol (either in US dollars or local Peruvian Soles). You can pay by credit card or PAYPAL online, but you will have to pay an 6% service charge, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. We do not accept bank checks or payment of the balance by travelerβs checks.
Of course! During the travel, your main luggage can be stored at our office or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Any equipment that you are not going to need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Donβt leave items of value with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (In the unlikely case of theft many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing all the items). Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.
Peru Hike Company can pick you up from your hotel, as long as itβs in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
Youβre responsible for your objects during the tour. Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our trucks, tents, or restaurants.
