Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain Trek 4 Days is one of the most spectacular high-altitude trekking adventures in Peru and without any doubt one of the most scenic routes in the entire Cusco region. This unforgettable journey takes you deep into the heart of the Vilcanota mountain range, where you will hike in the shadow of the mighty Apu Ausangate, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, immense glaciers, and colorful high-Andean lakes. One of the highlights of this trek is the opportunity to relax in the natural hot springs of Upis, located right in front of the majestic Ausangate, an experience that perfectly combines adventure and comfort.
Get ready to discover the magic and the intense colors of the Rainbow Mountain of Peru, also known as Vinicunca. This extraordinary natural wonder is located in the Vilcanota mountain range, near the highest snow-capped peak in the Cusco region, the sacred Apu Ausangate (6,384 m / 20,945 ft), which is considered one of the most important deities in the Andean worldview. From pre-Inca times until today, this mountain has been a place of worship, ceremonies, and offerings, and trekking through this area is a truly spiritual and cultural experience.
The Ausangate Trek combined with the Rainbow Mountain tour is carefully designed to offer you a deep and complete Andean experience in just four days. You will walk through remote valleys, cross high mountain passes, and follow ancient paths used by local communities for centuries. Along the way, you will be accompanied by herds of alpacas and llamas, admire crystal-clear lagoons with surreal colors, and camp in some of the most impressive landscapes in the Peruvian Andes. Reaching the legendary Rainbow Mountain on foot after days of trekking makes this moment even more rewarding and unforgettable.
Let this surreal landscape completely surround you in the Andes of Peru in the company of the best adventure travel specialists in Cusco. Imagine standing in front of a mountain painted with intense natural colors: red, magenta, turquoise, yellow, and green. It is not a dream; it is one of the most incredible natural wonders on Earth. This route is still less crowded than the classic treks, making it perfect for travelers who are looking for authenticity, silence, and a deep connection with nature.
We will pick you up from your accommodation at 5:00 a.m. to begin our rural adventure. From Cusco, we travel for approximately three hours in our private transportation to the small Andean town of Upis, located in the heart of the Cusco highlands and surrounded by impressive mountain scenery.
Upon arrival in this remote village, you will meet the rest of our trekking team, including our cooks and horsemen. After a brief introduction and final preparations, we begin our hike along a wide trail that gradually ascends toward the northeastern face of the majestic Ausangate Mountain.
After about three hours of walking through farming fields and past beautiful traditional houses, we arrive at our first campsite in Upis, where a well-deserved lunch will be waiting for us.
In the afternoon, you will have the option to take a scenic two-hour round-trip hike to the beautiful Upis Cocha Lake. Upon returning to camp, you will be welcomed with our happy hour (tea time), followed by dinner.
We spend the night camping surrounded by the sacred mountains of Ausangate, resting under their watchful presence in the heart of the Andes.
We will wake you up in the morning with a hot cup of coca leaf herbal tea or coffee served in your tent, giving you the perfect energy boost to start the day. After that, you will enjoy a warm and hearty breakfast in the crisp mountain air.
Today’s hike begins with a 2.5-hour walk through a beautiful high Andean valley, with the spectacular Ausangate Glacier accompanying us along the way, as we head toward the Arapa Pass. From the top of the pass (4,800 m / 15,748 ft), the scenery becomes even more impressive. You will stand in awe before the immense scale of the Andean landscape and the power of nature. If we are lucky, we may even see a condor soaring overhead, the largest flying bird in the world. Along the way, our guide will also share insights about the local flora and fauna.
We then begin a 1.5-hour descent to discover the stunning, multi-colored crystalline lagoons of Yanaqocha (Black Lagoon) and Pukaqocha (Red Lagoons), as well as several beautiful waterfalls. Be sure to keep your camera ready, as this is one of the most photogenic days of the trek.
Here, we will enjoy a well-earned and delicious lunch.
In the afternoon, we continue to our Hatun Pukaqocha campsite, located at 4,500 m / 14,764 ft.
Later, you will have time to explore the surroundings of the lakes, relax, and enjoy a hot cup of tea. A nutritious dinner will be served in the evening, giving you time to reflect on the day’s hike with your fellow trekkers and our team before heading to your tent for a restful night’s sleep.
There is no better way to start the day than with a hot cup of coca leaf herbal tea, a traditional drink enjoyed since Inca times and a natural way to boost your energy. We wake up early today to begin one of the most beautiful days of the entire journey.
After a hearty breakfast, we begin a two-hour ascent to Puka Pass (4,870 m / 15,977 ft). Along the trail, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of glaciers and deep green valleys, always accompanied by the impressive presence of the sacred Apu Ausangate. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture the stunning turquoise lagoons along the way.
Once we reach the top of the pass, the massive face of Apu Ausangate rises right in front of us. You will feel its powerful energy and understand why this mountain holds such deep spiritual importance for the Andean people. From here, you can also admire the wide Chilca Valley, where llamas and alpacas graze peacefully. In the distance, you will already be able to see the beginning of the Rainbow Mountain range, with its striking and colorful stripes.
After taking time for photos and enjoying the scenery, we begin a gentle descent of about 1.5 hours to our lunch spot in Anantapata (4,750 m / 15,584 ft). After enjoying a well-deserved lunch, we take some time to rest before starting another two-hour ascent to Warmisaya Pass (4,985 m / 16,354 ft).
From the top, the views are simply breathtaking, making you feel as if you were flying over the mountains like a bird. We then descend for about one hour to Surineqocha Lagoon (4,800 m / 15,748 ft), where our campsite will be waiting for us.
In the evening, you will have the chance to witness an unforgettable sunset behind Rainbow Mountain, filling the landscape with peace and serenity. After another excellent dinner, it will be time to rest and prepare for the next day’s adventure.
Enjoy a breathtaking sunrise at the summit of Rainbow Mountain, one of the most unforgettable experiences in the Peruvian Andes.
After an early breakfast at around 4:00 a.m., we set out toward Rainbow Mountain to witness this spectacular valley illuminated by the golden light of dawn. Thanks to our early start, you will have about one hour to explore and enjoy this incredible place before the large crowds arrive. Our expert guide will lead you to the best viewpoints so you can take outstanding photos and make the most of your time in this unique location.
Your guide will also explain in detail why this mountain displays such extraordinary colors and why it was only “discovered” in recent years. Today, Rainbow Mountain is considered one of the most impressive natural attractions in South America and one of Peru’s most iconic destinations. The only other mountains with similar natural colors can be found in China.
After fully enjoying this gem of the Peruvian Andes, we begin our trek toward the spectacular Red Valley. This remote place, visited by very few travelers, looks as if it belongs to another planet. You will be amazed not only by its striking landscapes, but also by the deep sense of peace and silence that surrounds the area. It takes about 45 minutes of walking to reach the main viewpoint, from where you will get the best panoramic views of the valley.
Finally, we begin a two-hour descent through beautiful Andean landscapes, passing ancient villages and herds of llamas. You will notice how these small communities still preserve their ancestral traditions.
After a delicious final lunch, our transport will be waiting to take you back to your accommodation in the city of Cusco.

All information meetings are held in your hotel at 6:00 p.m., one night before the tour begins. If you cannot attend, you must coordinate another time at the (Peru Hike) offices. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes and there you will be given a small duffel bag, in which you’ll put all the belongings you intend to bring on the trek that won’t be in your day pack.
ou’ll receive a canvas case or duffel bag during your briefing. The porters will take them on the way and will deliver them to you when you get to each camp. They measure 66 cm / 2 ft. Long x 36 cm / 1 ft. Wide.
A maximum of 5 kg is allowed for each duffel bag that includes the weight of your sleeping bag, mat, clothes and other personal items.
The trek has to be paid for in full by at least 7.30 pm two days before departure. For example, if your tour departs on a Wednesday, then you must come to our office before 7.30 pm on Monday.
It would be much appreciated if you pay the trek balance in cash US dollars or local currency. You can withdraw some money from several ATMs along Avenida Sol (either in US dollars or local Peruvian Soles). You can pay by credit card or PAYPAL online, but you will have to pay an 6% service charge, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. We do not accept bank checks or payment of the balance by traveler’s checks.
Of course! During the travel, your main luggage can be stored at our office or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Any equipment that you are not going to need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (In the unlikely case of theft many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing all the items). Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.
Peru Hike Company can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it’s in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
You’re responsible for your objects during the tour. Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our trucks, tents, or restaurants.
The Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain 4 Days was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From the moment we started the hike, I felt completely taken care of. Our guide was knowledgeable, patient, and always made sure we were feeling good at high altitude. The food prepared by the cook was surprisingly delicious for being out in the mountains, and the camping equipment was very comfortable.
The landscapes were beyond breathtaking – glaciers, turquoise lakes, herds of alpacas, and the snow-capped Ausangate Mountain always in the background. On the last day, arriving at Rainbow Mountain before the big crowds was magical. We had plenty of time to enjoy the view in peace and take beautiful photos.
I highly recommend this trek to anyone who wants to connect deeply with nature and experience the real Andes in Peru.
The 4-day trek was everything I hoped for and more! The altitude was challenging, but the beauty of the Ausangate region kept us going. Seeing Rainbow Mountain at sunrise was the perfect ending
The 4-day trek around Ausangate was tough but absolutely worth it. Every day offered new breathtaking scenery—turquoise lakes, snowy peaks, and finally, Rainbow Mountain. An incredible experience!
This was one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. The trek around Ausangate was simply stunning – every day brought new landscapes, from bright blue lagoons to towering glaciers. The altitude made it tough, especially on Day 3, but our guides were incredibly supportive. Finally, Day 4 at Rainbow Mountain was the grand finale – seeing the vibrant colours of the mountain was an unforgettable moment. Highly recommend for adventure lovers!
This 4-day trek was one of the most spectacular experiences of my life. The first days were filled with breathtaking views of Ausangate, as we crossed high-altitude passes and crystal-clear lakes. The hike was demanding, but the scenery made it all worth it. On the final day, after an intense ascent, we reached the famous Rainbow Mountain, a place that looked surreal. The tour was exceptionally well planned, and the guides were fantastic. A once-in-a-lifetime experience!
