The Quelccaya Glacier & Sibinacocha Lagoon Full Day Hike is a spectacular adventure to one of the most remote and impressive regions of the Peruvian Andes. This full-day experience combines a visit to the Quelccaya Glacier, the largest tropical ice cap in the world, with the breathtaking beauty of Sibinacocha Lagoon, a vast turquoise lake surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.
The journey takes you deep into a pristine high-altitude landscape, passing through wide Andean plains, alpine wetlands, and remote valleys. Before reaching the glacier area, you will stop at Sibinacocha Lagoon, a perfect place to enjoy panoramic views, take stunning photographs, and appreciate the serenity of this sacred Andean lake.
The hike continues toward the impressive ice formations of the Quelccaya Glacier, including views of the nearby Suyuparina Glacier, an important glacial extension within the area. Along the trail, you may spot herds of alpacas and llamas and learn about the significance of these glaciers for local communities and the Andean ecosystem.
This moderate hike is ideal for travelers seeking a unique and less-visited destination. The tour includes a hot Andean breakfast and a traditional lunch in a local community, making it a complete and rewarding high-altitude experience surrounded by glaciers, lagoons, and untouched nature.
Our journey starts well before sunrise with early hotel pick-up at approximately 3:00 a.m. As we leave Cusco behind, we drive for about five hours across the vast Andean highlands, passing isolated villages, wide-open plateaus, and dramatic mountain scenery characteristic of southern Peru.
Weather and visibility permitting, we may stop briefly at the breathtaking Sibinacocha Lagoon. When conditions are favorable, we take time to admire this serene high-altitude lake, surrounded by sweeping mountain landscapes, and capture memorable photographs.
We then continue by vehicle to the remote highland community of Phinaya, where we arrive later in the morning. Here, we enjoy a traditional Andean breakfast, providing both energy and comfort while allowing for gradual acclimatization to the altitude.
After breakfast, we drive for roughly one more hour, heading deeper into the high Andes toward Suyuparina, the gateway to the impressive Quelccaya Glacier — the largest tropical glacier on Earth.
Once the road ends, we set out on a short and easy walk of about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the glacier viewpoint. Along the way, expansive Andean landscapes and striking glacial features surround us. At the viewpoint, we have ample time to observe the massive ice formations, take photos, and appreciate the unique environment shaped by ice and altitude.
After exploring the glacier area, we return by vehicle to Phinaya, where a freshly prepared traditional lunch awaits, made with local ingredients from the region.
In the afternoon, we begin our scenic return drive to Cusco, retracing the highland route. The tour concludes with drop-off near Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, with arrival expected between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., depending on road and traffic conditions.

Of course! During the travel, your main luggage can be stored at our office(you can organize briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Any equipment that you are not going to need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (In the unlikely case of theft many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing all the items). Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.
Note: If you plan to leave your luggage at our office, please do so at least one day in advance. On the day the tour begins, we will not be able to receive any luggage, as our office remains closed until 9:00 a.m..
Peru Hike Company can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it’s in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
You’re responsible for your objects during the tour. Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our trucks, tents, or restaurants.
We stopped at a lagoon to take photos. The tour was paced well—no rushing to finish quickly. Our guide André was always ready to help and take photos, and the van was new and super safe.
Highly recommend this unique and less touristy adventure!
