The Quelccaya Glacier & Suyuparina Hike is a spectacular full-day adventure to one of the most impressive natural wonders of the Peruvian Andes. Quelccaya is the largest tropical ice cap in the world and represents a unique and breathtaking destination surrounded by high Andean landscapes, vast plains, turquoise lagoons, and snow-capped peaks.
This unforgettable experience takes you deep into a remote and pristine region, far from the crowds, where you will hike through high-altitude wetlands, rocky terrain, and wide open valleys with incredible views of the Quelccaya Glacier and the Suyuparina Glacier. Along the way, you will see herds of alpacas and llamas, and you will learn about the importance of this glacier for the local communities and the Andean ecosystem.
The hike is moderate and rewarding, perfect for travelers who want to explore a truly wild and less-visited part of Peru. At the viewpoints, you will enjoy stunning panoramic views of the glacier, surrounding mountains, and beautiful lagoons, making this tour a paradise for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. A hot Andean breakfast and a traditional lunch in a local community are included, making this a complete and comfortable high-altitude adventure.
We begin our journey very early in the morning with pick-up from your hotel at 3:00 a.m. From Cusco, we travel for approximately 5 hours through the Andean highlands toward the remote village of Phinaya, enjoying scenic landscapes along the way.
Upon arrival in Phinaya, we enjoy a comforting Andean breakfast, ideal for acclimatization and preparation for the adventure ahead. After breakfast, we continue by vehicle for about 1 additional hour, driving deeper into the high Andes toward the Quelccaya Glacier – Suyuparina, recognized as the largest tropical glacier in the world.
From the point where the vehicle route ends, we begin a short walk of approximately 15 to 20 minutes to reach the glacier viewpoint. During this walk, you will witness the impressive natural beauty of the area, surrounded by vast Andean landscapes and glacial scenery. At the viewpoint, there will be time to enjoy the surroundings, take photographs, and admire the massive ice formations of the Quelccaya Glacier.
After the visit, we return to Phinaya, where a traditional lunch awaits, prepared with fresh local ingredients typical of the region. Following lunch, we board our transport and begin the journey back to Cusco.
On the return route, we make a special stop at the magical Sibinacocha Lagoon, one of the largest and most beautiful high-altitude lakes in the Peruvian Andes, offering spectacular photo opportunities.
We conclude the experience with drop-off near the Plaza de Armas of Cusco, arriving between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., depending on traffic and road conditions.

Of course! During the travel, your main luggage can be stored at our office(you can organize briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Any equipment that you are not going to need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (In the unlikely case of theft many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing all the items). Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.
Peru Hike Company can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it’s in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
You’re responsible for your objects during the tour. Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our trucks, tents, or restaurants.
We stopped at a lagoon to take photos. The tour was paced well—no rushing to finish quickly. Our guide André was always ready to help and take photos, and the van was new and super safe.
Highly recommend this unique and less touristy adventure!
